South Dos Palos is a small, unincorporated town located less than one hour away from UC Merced on the outskirts of Merced County.? While few written records of the town exist, available resources reveal a history of disenfranchisement, where languishing industry combined with a lack of government support in surrounding cities have made life difficult for residents.?
In an attempt to counteract the stagnant state of matters in South Dos Palos, several organizations including CURAJ (Community University Research and Action for Justice:? an initiative of UC faculty and leaders from Central Valley community based organizations), CRLA (California Rural Legal Assistance:? public interest legal advocates), and PolicyLink (policy organization from Oakland, California) began working with the board members of the George Washington Carver Center, South Dos Palos' community leadership, to gather data about the community in order to expedite the process of gaining positive change and resources for South Dos Palos residents.? By collecting census-type data from residents, community leaders have a better chance of securing government grants and other support by having more data about the town's residents and local conditions.? Through household surveys administered by a group of UC Merced students under the leadership of Dr. Robin DeLugan, UC Merced reached out to assist South Dos Palos and the leaders of the Carver Center to conduct research about the community.? The ultimate goal was to gather information to bring more attention to the community, including information necessary to apply for an d potentially secure more government grants to assist community development.
