Report: One In Five U.S. Adults Does Not Use The Internet

pew_Internet_american_life_logoInternet adoption among U.S. adults increased rapidly from the mid-90s to about 2005. Since then, though, the number of adult Internet users has remained almost stable at around 78%. The Pew Internet & American Life Project's latest poll shows that this trend continued in 2011. Those who are online use the Internet more than ever before, but about one in five U.S. adults is simply not online.

How I Paid Off $24000 In Student Loans In 4 Years - Business Insider

Want some free money?! You could be in luck. Today, LearnVest is launching a giveaway to award three lucky winners a $1,000 cash prize to put toward their student loans. (Yep, that?s $1,000 each!).

How do you enter?

Become a member:?Create a Learnvest account. Just because you get the Daily doesn?t mean you?re a LearnVest member.

Tell your friends:?We want to help as many people as possible to pay down their loans, and the more friends you tell, the more chances you?ll get to enter. (To let them know about this great offer, use the button in today?s Daily email.)

Make a plan:?Choose the financial plan that?s right for you?and find out how your loans fit into your big picture. As an added incentive, create a plan within the next 15 days and get 25% off! Just enter the code GETMYPLAN25 at checkout.

Why are we doing all of this??Student loan debt in the U.S. recently surpassed $1 trillion, and the average student loan debt is $25,000.?We know it?s an issue affecting many of you?and many of us.

To inspire you, below LearnVest Senior Editor Laura Shin writes about how she finally paid off her student loan.

In May of 2008, I graduated from journalism school with a master of arts, new friends from around the world ? and a decade?s worth of student loan debt.

I was lucky in that my student loan was, due to a hefty scholarship, ?just? $20,500. I was lucky in that my parents paid for my much more expensive undergraduate education and that they paid my living expenses while I was in grad school. I was lucky in many ways, but in one way I was deeply unlucky: I had somehow managed to reach my mid-30s without having a clue how to manage my finances.

My journey to the final loan payment I made in February was filled with so much fear, shame and, above all, anxiety, that when my colleagues at LearnVest suggested I write this piece, I didn?t want to.

I didn?t want the world to know that I?d spent the first two years of the loan payments in a fog of confusion about how to get rid of this debt, or that I?d racked up almost $8,000 in credit card debt, and I had to pay that off too, or that the way I got rid of the debt was by freakishly and obsessively tracking how I spent every dollar. I didn?t want to reveal these things to future editors or to people in the well-to-do, achievement-oriented?communities in which I grew up.

But given how many ways I went wrong on my way to becoming debt-free, I thought my own tale of ?how I did it??that is, paid off more than $20,000 in student loan debt within three-and-a-half years?could help LearnVesters and the 37 million Americans with student loan debt get there too.

How I Made a Mess of My Finances

My predicament had nothing to do with bad parenting: My sister, who was raised by the same people, has always handled money well.?Purely because of my here-and-now personality, until about two years ago, my basic philosophy toward money was, ?Have it, spend it.? I also had no concept of a separation between ?I want that? and ?I?ll get that.?

As recently as April 2010, I didn?t have a savings account. When I was in college, I remember that my bank told me to get a savings and a checking account, but I never fully understood why savings even existed since, if you actually wanted to use the money, you needed to take it from checking. So when I got my first job in New York, I opened only a checking account and put ?all? my money in there. I put ?all? in quotes because I lived paycheck to paycheck, not thinking there might be a time when money wouldn?t come every two weeks.

So in spring 2010, two years after graduating, I had a good job and made good money for a writer, but I was digging myself a credit card hole that would, by September, reach $7,500. (The culprits: Gilt Groupe and New York City boutique shopping, a three-week trip to India, constant dinners and drinks out with friends,?my book addiction?and God knows what else.)

See why I hesitated to tell you?and the world?what a money mess I was? But if someone as far gone as I was can pull her finances together, then so can you.

When Things Started to Turn Around

In April 2010, when I was $6,500 in credit card debt and $18,432 in student loan debt, I read?an article in The New York Times?about female-focused personal finance sites. (That was how I got hooked on LearnVest, long before I worked here.) In September, after my trip to India, I took a personal finance workshop, where I learned about this fabulous tool. It was called a budget.

It worked just like the?LearnVest Budgeting Tool. You take your monthly income, subtract your monthly expenses such as rent, utilities, etc. Then you do this magical thing: You put some money in savings and keep it there to watch it grow. Next, you make a payment toward your debt or, in my case, payments since I had the student loan and credit cards. As for the rest? That?s what you live on.

I figured out that, depending on how fast I wanted to pay my loan and amass savings, I had to live on between $190 and $240 per week. In cash.?

Planning My Spending

I immediately stopped all credit card spending except for items I could only buy online. I unsubscribed from Gilt. I stopped getting drinks almost every night. I stopped buying every single thing that looked good at the grocery and the farmers? market (I love to cook) and instead started planning out my meals so I only bought what I needed for that week.?I even started looking up restaurant menus online and choosing my meal before going out so I knew how much I would spend.

In essence, I started ?planning? all my spending.

This is how it worked: I took out the amount I had to spend that week from the ATM, and if I had to buy something with my credit card online, I immediately returned that same amount in cash back to my checking account. I started a Google spreadsheet that tracked every single dollar I spent so if I spent over my limit one week, I knew how much less to spend the next. Similarly, if I underspent one week, then the following week, I knew my how much bigger my budget was.

The sheet also tracked money I hadn?t even spent yet: As soon as I made plans for the next week or the next month, I would mark on that future day a dollar estimate of how much that activity might cost, i.e. ?Birthday dinner, $50,? so that when I got to that week, I already knew I had that much less for other spending.?It also kept me, when the night finally arrived, from being tempted?to have another drink I hadn?t planned on.

How My Financial Picture?and Life?Started to Change

Not everyone in debt may need to be as obsessive as I was, but since I was trying to undo more than a decade-long habit of buying myself whatever I wanted whenever I wanted, I needed to be hyper-vigilant.

I am not going to lie: Living on this budget had an impact on my social life. But I had fallen in with an international crowd at grad school, so coincidentally, at the same time I was trying to go out less, the last of my grad school friends moved back to their home countries, so my social life naturally became less active.

I had already made some balance transfers so my credit card debt was no longer accruing interest, but for one card, the 0% period was going to end in January 2011, and I didn?t think I would be able to pay it off by then. I was getting heart palpitations just thinking about interest growing on my already sizable debt.

That Christmas, I got a gift from my parents?several thousand dollars they said I should put toward my student loan debt. I?m sorry, Mom and Dad, but the truth is, I used it to help pay off that credit card. (As I type this, tears actually spring up because it really hurts me to tell the world that I lied to them.)

But thanks to that gift and the five months I had spent being really diligent about my budget, by February 2011, I was free of my credit card debt. I had even saved enough money to take a trip to Mexico with 15 of my grad school friends.

Finally Paying It Off

I began to use plastic again, but I stuck to my weekly budget?and I ramped up the student loan payments. By this point, my student loan debt was just over $15,000.?

Around the same time, I got a new job?at LearnVest?and increased my freelance income with a new regular writing gig. (Increasing your income, whether through a raise or side income, is an under-sung way of helping pay down debt.)

I also started learning more about personal finance, and realizing, not only did I need to pay off my debt, I needed to build an emergency fund.?A CFP I worked with counseled me not to worry about my student loan since the interest rate was a ?low? 6.8%. She suggested I stop the loan payments, build my emergency cushion, then pay the loan off.

I tried and watched with pride as my emergency fund grew. But I felt dismay every time I looked at the student loan balance. Before meeting with her, the debt had fallen below $10,000, but by the time winter arrived, the interest, which accrued every day, pushed it above $10,000. Again.

Over Christmas, I made a decision: When I got my bonus in late January, I immediately sent a payment in the same amount to the lender. Then I took a massive amount out of my savings account, essentially decimating it. The February day it hit my checking account, I quietly logged onto the student loan website while at work and made my final payment.

But I?d been so traumatized by the experience of seeing the interest increase my debt on a daily basis, I still didn?t quite believe it. It wasn?t until a full month passed and I received a paper letter from the lender showing that I owed nothing, that I finally?finally?breathed a full sigh of relief.

Why are experts calling the current student loan situation an ?Impending economic crisis?? In our infographic, we take a closer look at the numbers.?See where you fit in.

Sports Supplements Aid To Sustain Athlete Health | Online Success ...

?

By Darrell Q. White

Sports supplements are products athletes can use when they need some help for their workout routine. Compared to people who are not active, athletes need a different kind of nutrition because of all of the energy they use and the muscle they build. Supplemental proteins and amino acids may be necessary for those athletes who build lots of muscle; however, others may only need to provide extra nutrients and vitamins in the form of a multivitamin. For whatever reason they are necessary, there are many solutions available to athletes as far as fitness supplements go.

You may need to start considering sports supplements when weight lifting is not supplying you the muscle growth you are looking for. If you do not get all of the vitamins and nutrients you need, your muscles will not be able to sustain growth. This issue can be resolved by using amino acid supplements and protein powders. Even though a lot of sports supplements for muscle building are surrounded by hype, you should not be extremely skeptical. Most of these supplements really accomplish what they are supposed to. The goal of many of these muscle building supplements is to provide your body with the building blocks it needs for muscle growth.

Meal replacement shakes and performance bars are also helpful for athletes who are continually going somewhere. Both of these things provide plenty of energy, protein, vitamins and minerals. Workout sessions may also be supplemented with sports drinks to provide nutrient replacement.

Not all sports supplements will actually be good for you. One good practice to follow is to make sure you pick the product with the largest quantity of natural ingredients. The primary goal for most supplements is to offer endurance and muscle recovery. The greatest way to do both of these things is by providing the body all of the essential items it needs to perform those functions on its own.

Of course, a lot of the ingredients found in sports supplements are actually things that can be obtained through a healthy diet. Similarly, making some of the compounds seen in the ingredients is another job your body can do. The quantities athletes obtain from food and production cannot really replace everything that is lost during a workout. This is where supplements come in. Some supplements can also help take care of muscle fatigue that often occurs after hard workouts. Those who participate in athletics require a lot more energy, so it just makes sense that extra nutrients may be needed.

Energy costs raise concerns on growing economy

By msnbc.com staff and news reports

The U.S. economy kept growing moderately in the late winter months but rising prices for gasoline and other energy products were beginning to worry producers and consumers across the country, the Federal Reserve said on Wednesday.

"Reports from the 12 Federal Reserve districts indicated that the economy continued to expand at a modest to moderate pace from mid-February through late March," the central bank said in its latest "Beige Book" summary of national activity.

It found several hopeful signs for growth, including steady hiring and shortages of skilled workers as well as brisk new-vehicle sales and improving residential real estate markets but with a strong dose of concern about energy costs.

"Manufacturers in many districts expressed optimism about near-term growth prospects, but they are somewhat concerned about rising petroleum prices," the Fed said.

Similarly, while immediate prospects for consumer spending were seen as bright, "contacts in several districts expressed concerns that rising gas prices could limit discretionary spending in the months to come."

According to the report:

Activity in the Boston, Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, and San Francisco Districts grew at a moderate pace, while Cleveland and St. Louis cited modest growth. New York reported that economic growth picked up somewhat. Philadelphia and Richmond cited improving business conditions. The economy in Minneapolis grew at a solid pace and Kansas City's economy expanded at a faster pace.

Hiring was steady or showed a modest increase in most districts, the report said. But companies continued to have difficulty finding qualified workers for high-skilled jobs.

The Beige Book, prepared this time by the Cleveland Fed based on information collected by April 2, has market interest because it is based on anecdotal reports from business people from coast to coast and thus reflects real-life conditions.?

Radical Muslim can be sent to US, court rules

John Stillwell / PA via AP, file

Abu Hamza, who can now be lawfully extradited to the United States to face terror charges, along with five others.

By Alastair Jamieson, msnbc.com

A radical Muslim preacher can be lawfully extradited from Britain to the United States to face charges that he helped set up an al-Qaida terrorist training camp in Oregon, a court in Europe ruled Tuesday.

Abu Hamza, whose amputated forearms are replaced by hooks, is accused of conspiring to establish a training camp in Bly, Ore., where followers received combat and weapons training for violent jihad, or holy war, in Afghanistan.

The U.S. also believes he helped the extremists who kidnapped 16 foreign tourists in Yemen in 1998. Three British tourists and one Australian visitor were killed in a shootout between Yemeni security forces and the captors.

?

His extradition ?and that of five others on similar charges ? has been on hold since 2008 while European judges considered whether conditions at the high-security ADX Florence prison in Colorado would constitute a breach of human rights, making extradition unlawful.

Al-Qaida's top man in Europe freed from British jail

Based on charges filed in the U.S., the suspects could get lifelong jail terms without parole in maximum security conditions, such as with concrete furniture, timed showers, tiny cell windows and no outside communications.

The European Court of Human Rights, based in Strasbourg, France, finally ruled Tuesday that five of the six would not be subject to "ill-treatment" at ADX Florence. The court put off its decision on a sixth accused, Haroon Rashid Aswat, as it awaits further information, including details about his mental health.

The other five may now be legally extradited, although the court said procedures should not start until a possible appeals process is completed.

Egypt-born Hamza, also known Mustafa Kamal Mustafa, is already serving a seven-year sentence in Britain for soliciting to murder and inciting racial hatred.

His case had become the focus of growing concern that the European court could over-rule Britain?s attempts to extradite him, potentially compromising national security.

Obama to talk economy, trade with Brazil's president

WASHINGTON (CNN) -

From jet fighters to science students to the upcoming Summit of the Americas, there are plenty of topics for President Barack Obama and visiting Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff to discuss during her White House visit Monday.

It is Rousseff's first official visit to Washington as Brazilian president and comes more than a year after Obama went to Brazil, shortly after Rousseff came to power in the South American country, which is the world's sixth-largest economy.

Two-way trade between Brazil and the United States last year totaled around $74 billion, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, and the balance has gone from a U.S. deficit to a surplus in recent years.

Brazil has recently announced a series of measures to boost economic growth and rein in its overvalued currency, including slashing interest rates and levying taxes on short-term currency inflows. At the same time, Brazil complains that low U.S. interest rates amid sluggish recovery are hurting foreign trade partners.

Monday's talks will focus on economic ties and other bilateral and regional issues as part of the leaders' "ongoing dialogue regarding the growing partnership between the United States and Brazil," the White House said in a statement.

Brazil's Foreign Ministry said the visit "will allow the deepening of the Brazil-United States relationship, and advance bilateral dialogue between the countries."

While no specific agenda has been released, topics likely to come up include the search by both countries for new military aircraft, with Brazil concerned that the United States recently halted plans to purchase Brazilian training planes in order to seek a possible U.S. manufacturer.

At the same time, Brazil is considering whether to buy new jet fighters of its own from either the United States or France.

Rousseff also is expected to talk about her country's "Science Without Borders" program, which seeks to send 100,000 students overseas for science education and training, including 20,000 to the United States.

After her White House visit Monday, she will travel Tuesday to Boston to speak at two desired destinations of Brazilian science students -- Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Kerry Washington gets lucky with 'Scandal'

NEW YORK | Mon Apr 9, 2012 4:46pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Actress Kerry Washington, star of the new ABC drama "Scandal", calls herself the "the luckiest broad in showbiz".

Washington's lead role as a crisis management expert has not only won the actress over to television, but it's also the first drama series on a major broadcast TV network in recent memory to star a black actress in the lead role.

"I wasn't looking for it," Washington, 35, told Reuters of her move to TV after years of movie and stage work. "But I did think, 'some of the best writing is in TV right now, and some of the best opportunities for women are on TV right now.'"

"Scandal", the latest project from "Grey's Anatomy" and "Private Practice" creator Shonda Rhimes, stars Washington as Olivia Pope, Washington D.C. public relations genius and head of Pope & Associates crisis management firm.

Washington is best known for her work in films like "Ray," where she played singer Ray Charles' wife, and will costar in "Django Unchained," Quentin Tarantino's upcoming western set in slavery-era United States. She made her Broadway debut in 2010 in David Mamet's "Race".

Washington said she had been looking for a cable TV project, mainly because the shorter seasons would make it easier to juggle her thriving film and stage careers. She wasn't keen on doing a broadcast network show until, being a fan of Rhimes's work, she read the script for "Scandal".

Now, said Washington, "I'm totally hooked ... I will continue to do movies, but I have fallen in love with television."

FEW LEAD TV ROLES FOR BLACK WOMEN

"Scandal", which had its premiere on ABC last Thursday, isn't just a significant change for Washington. The series is the first network drama in recent memory with a black actress in the lead role.

"It's sad that it's such a big topic of conversation and that we just don't see it more often," said Washington. "A network has not stood behind this kind of show."

A diverse group of actors including Guillermo Diaz, Henry Ian Cusick and Columbus Short portray Olivia Pope's talented, and often cunning staff.

Judy Smith, a leading crisis management consultant whose clients include NFL player Michael Vick and former White House intern Monica Lewinsky, was the inspiration for the series and serves as producer.

"She's helped us all understand the high stakes of this world," said Washington of Smith's involvement. "Somebody walks into your office on what will probably be the worst day of their entire life and they say, 'fix it.'"

Pope's tough, no-nonsense personality may make some fans quiver - even Washington's mom called Pope "mean" after seeing the first episode, the actress said. But Washington sees noble intentions at the core of what her character does.

"She's somebody who really cares about her fellow human beings, and she believes that people deserve a second chance, that if they're willing to take responsibility for their wrongs they deserve another shot at life."

Each episode introduces a new client and case - a closeted gay war hero suspected of murder, a madam with high-profile clients. But in Thursday's premiere, it was clear that Pope is involved in a scandal of her own when she and the U.S. President, played by Tony Goldwyn, passionately kissed in the Oval Office.

"People are really getting caught up and invested in that storyline," said Washington. She cites the crew's response to upcoming episodes as evidence of the show's engaging quality.

"There were huge arguments on set," Washington said, laughing. "One day there were brushes flying in the makeup trailer because one of the stylists was so upset (about a scene)."

Among topics for debate has been whether the strong and sophisticated Pope would succumb to the Commander-in-Chief's charm.

"Don't we all have girlfriends we think that about - 'Isn't she smarter than that?'" asked Washington. "We all know women who've been in that place, and that guy probably wasn't the President of the United States!"

Notre Dame football: Former Irish QB Kiel dead at 50

Former Notre Dame quarterback and punter Blair Kiel, who finished his?Irish football career having attempted more passes than anyone in?Notre Dame history, died of natural causes Sunday afternoon in?Columbus, Ind. He was 50.

According to WISH-TV of Indianapolis Kiel also had Crohn's disease.

Kiel, the uncle of Notre Dame freshman quarterback Gunner Kiel, played
for the Irish from 1980-83 after leading Columbus East to its only
state title in football in the fall of 1979.

He started all or major parts of all four seasons in South Bend,
qualifying him as the first four-year starter for Notre Dame at the
quarterback position since Gus Dorais in 1910-13.

He completed 297 career throws (only Terry Hanratty with 304 had
completed more at the time Kiel finished his college career) on 609
attempts for 3,650 yards, 17 touchdowns and 32 interceptions.

He also punted 260 times for a 40.67-yard average that ranked second
only behind Bill Shakespeare?s 40.71-yard mark (Kiel set a Notre Dame
career mark with his 10,534 punting yards). Kiel also rushed 165 times
for 164 career yards and five TDs.

Kiel came on the scene for the final offensive series of Notre Dame?s
29-27 win over Michigan in 1980, leading the Irish on the final drive
that produced Harry Oliver?s game-winning field goal ? and held onto
the starting signal-calling job most of the remainder of his Irish
career.

An 11th-round pick of the NFL?s Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1984, Kiel
played for Tampa in 1984-85, Indianapolis in 1986-87 and Green Bay in
1988 (he played in one game that season) and also in 1990 and 1991. He
also was listed on Canadian Football League rosters in Saskatchewan
(1989) and Toronto (1992) and an Arena Football League roster with
Cincinnati (1993).

In 25 career NFL games ? including three starts ? Kiel completed 108
of 193 passes for 1,296 yards and eight touchdowns and had seven
interceptions.

He also rushed 16 times for 105 yards and a touchdown and punted 17
times with a 37.1-yard average.

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Patent Law 101: What?s Wrong And Ways To Make It Right

Patent-Law1Patent blogs were lit up after the Supreme Court?s decision in Prometheus v. Mayo. Some have hailed the decision as a ?harbinger of progress to come? while others have denounced it as revealing ?just how little the Court understands the nuances of science, philosophy and language ? let alone the patent law itself.? Describing the decision as ?controversial? is probably an understatement. The opinion focused primarily on Section 101 of the United States Patent Act, which sets out the basic categories of patent eligible subject matter. The statute is short and sweet: "Whoever invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof, may obtain a patent therefore ..." So simple, right?
