Lack of Southerners on US presidential tickets

ATLANTA (AP) ? For decades, Southerners put a firm imprint on national politics from both sides of the aisle, holding the White House for 25 of the past 50 years and producing a legion of Capitol Hill giants during the 20th century. But that kind of obvious power has waned as Democrats and Republicans in the region navigate the consequences of tidal shifts in demographics, migration and party identity.

This is the second consecutive presidential election without a Southerner on either major party ticket. That has happened in back-to-back elections only once, 1968 and 1972, since Franklin Roosevelt, a New Yorker, won four consecutive elections with overwhelming support across what was then Democrats' solid South. (The 2008 candidates were Democrats Barack Obama of Illinois and Joe Biden of Delaware, and Republicans John McCain of Arizona and Sarah Palin of Alaska. This year, it's Obama and Biden, and Republicans Mitt Romney of Massachusetts and Paul Ryan of Wisconsin.)

Besides the national dearth, the South's congressional power players are either aging icons ? black Democrats John Lewis of Georgia and Jim Clyburn of South Carolina ? or hail from the region's periphery ? Republican Senate leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and House GOP leader Eric Cantor of Virginia.

But Kentucky was a Civil War border state, while Virginia, for all its antebellum credentials, is increasingly racially, culturally and politically diverse. That puts both states outside the Bible Belt, Deep South core that, fairly or unfairly, has long defined the region on the national stage.

This is all new for a proud region that produced Presidents George W. Bush and Lyndon B. Johnson of Texas, Bill Clinton of Arkansas and Jimmy Carter of Georgia. George H.W. Bush claimed Texas as well, despite his roots as an East Coast moderate, and he was a national figure by the time he was elected. Newt Gingrich of Georgia drove the 1994 Republican resurrection in the U.S. House, and Tom DeLay of Texas extended it. Trent Lott of Mississippi led Republicans in the Senate. Lott's fellow Mississippian, Haley Barbour, helped fuel a GOP rise as national party chairman. Before them came a raft of speakers, floor leaders and notables.

Elected officials, party leaders and campaign strategists on both sides cite the old rule that politics is cyclical and say the table is set for their return to prominence, depending on how the parties and their candidates present themselves to the public.

For Democrats, the dry spell, as much as anything, is rooted in successive generations of white voters abandoning the party in federal elections and shifting the balance of power in statehouses and courthouses in nearly every state. There are simply fewer Democrats to identify as prospective national players.

"You've seen a peak in Republican power and the bottoming-out for Democrats," said former U.S. attorney Doug Jones, of Birmingham, Ala., who represented his state's Democratic Party as a convention delegate in Charlotte, N.C. "We've just got to do a better job educating folks about their bottom lines and what our policies mean for people on a day-to-day basis." That task, Jones said, "will have to take place over multiple election cycles."

For Republicans, a more complex dynamic is at play.

Gingrich and Lott, who toiled for many terms in the minority, were well-positioned to become national players when Republicans gained majorities. But now that initial wave of Southern GOP leadership is mostly off the stage. The party does have a deep Southern bench, with governors like 40-year-old Nikki Haley of South Carolina and 41-year-old Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, along with a host of neophyte senators and representatives. This new generation of Southern Republicans must compete among themselves and with the likes of Wisconsin Rep. Ryan, the Republican vice presidential nominee, and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, who delivered the GOP convention's keynote address.

"We've got some impressive new folks out there," said Timmy Teepell, a Republican campaign strategist and former chief of staff to Jindal.

If anything, ambitious Southern politicians are victims of the region's success.

Within both parties, the region's influence has been as the conservative branch opposite Northeastern liberals or Midwestern moderates. Since Roosevelt, that has dictated balanced national tickets.

Democrats have historically reached for regional balance.

They have nominated a non-Southerner eight times since 1952. Five of those times, the nominee added a Southerner to the ticket, each time a senator.

When Republicans gained the Southern advantage after Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act, their focus became ideological balance. They did not necessarily define it by geography, but the result was the same: a nod to Southern conservatism. Richard Nixon's "Southern strategy," co-opted from Alabama Gov. George Wallace and his 1968 presidential bid as an independent, had gone national.

"The South is more like the rest of the country, and the rest of the country is more like the South," said Barbour, a former two-term Mississippi governor.

Romney continued the trend with Ryan, a tea party hero who pitches himself as a tax-slasher and budget cutter. Many Southerners were wary of Romney during the primaries, and social conservative Rick Santorum won several state contests.

Louisiana Republican Party Chairman Roger Villere said the Ryan pick settled any nerves. "It sends a great message to conservatives," he said. "We are excited about November."

Jones, the Alabama delegate, said Democrats find hope in demographic shifts.

Barack Obama won Virginia and North Carolina in 2008 on the strength of young and non-white voters. Florida has long been a competitive melting pot. Jones said white Southerners under age 30 or 35 are up for grabs, as well. Presidential exit polls from 2008 showed younger voters in some Southern states split evenly in states where Obama still lost by wide margins. That group, Jones said, is less likely to base their politics on anything to do with race.

"That's one of the problems we've had in the South," Jones said. "We've always been against something, whether it was civil rights or something else. The Southern vote is so often driven about what we're against."

If Democrats work methodically, he said, to "define ourselves as who we are, as opposed to just not being the other guy," the party will grow and inevitably produce national leaders again.

Arkansas Democratic Chairman Will Bond said his state provides a blueprint.

Arkansas is the last former Confederate state where Democrats still control both chambers of the Legislature. Republicans cut into their majorities in the national GOP sweep of 2010, but couldn't take over. Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe, meanwhile, won every county on his way to a second term.

Bond said the Arkansas party, besides enjoying the afterglow of having produced a president, has focused relentlessly on fiscal responsibility, education and economic development. "We just have to do a better job of telling our story across the South," he said.

World Series of Fighting: What you need to know

Another fight promotion has jumped into the MMA world. The World Series of Fighting announced their upcoming fight card and presence among MMA's promoters.

What is it? The new promotion will be based in Las Vegas and is led by Ray Sefo, a legendary kickboxer, and Sig Rogich, a Nevada-based PR and marketing executive. Their first card will be on Nov. 3 and air on NBC Sports Network.

Do they have any known names lined up? Former WEC champ and UFC bantamweight Miguel Torres will headline the first show. Gerald Harris and Josh Burkman, who have both fought in the UFC, are also slated for the first show, along with Bobby Lashley.

Who will announce? Bas Rutten, the MMA guru who hosts "Inside MMA" on AXSTV; Michael Schiavello, the Australian announcer who often calls fights for AXSTV; and former pro wrestler Kurt Angle will call the fight.

What Your Kids Want Most Is Time, Not Money | The Weekly Mother

Its so easy to give your kids a few dollars and send them on their way. They probably even came to you and asked for money to hang out with their buddies. But, many times what they really want is time with you. They dont want to interfere with your busy lifestyle so they take the easy way out by going out. You make it easier for them by handing over the money, no questions asked.

Todays rapid paced world makes it difficult to find spare time to meet with your family much less spend quality bonding time. Everyone is always on the go and you see each other in the morning before the days activities begin and at night when everyone comes home; but then its time for bed.

Even meals are too often eaten standing up or at a fast food restaurant. Theres no time for conversation and that includes both talking and listening to your children. Its the wise family that schedules time to be together.

Set aside at least one night a week for the family to be together, alone. This doesnt mean the kids can invite friends over on that night. Take the phone off the hook or any activity or conversation will be constantly interrupted. If youve not done this all along and your kids are older, it will be difficult at first but soon everyone will look forward to it.

What you do is not that important. But, its important that youre together. Talk to your children, asked them questions, be interested in their world and get involved if needed. Listen to how they spent their day and the problems and successes they had.

Board games for the family can be fun and entertaining. If youre watching your budget, most board games can be found inexpensively at discount stores and yard sales. You probably already have the basic games such as cards, dominoes and checkers. Younger children love for someone to read to them. If theyre older, read with them and share what youve read afterwards.

Work together on crafts or cooking. Building something together is a great way to discover each others talents and converse at the same time. You probably remember when your dad helped you build a model airplane or go-cart. Perhaps it was memorable times in the kitchen with mom baking a cake or preparing dinner together.

Always compliment your children and emphasize the positive not the negative. Let them know youre there for them anytime, anywhere. Hugs are always nice to enforce the positive and so are notes left unexpectedly on the refrigerator or lunch box.

All together, time doesnt have to be spent at home but try to plan outside activities that allow interaction. A camping trip or fishing expedition would be fun and inexpensive. You could even camp out in the back yard.

Your kids probably are involved in many school sports, plays and festivals they would love for you to attend. Giving children your time and love is not expensive and one of the most worthwhile investments youll ever make.

U.S. economy adds 96,000 jobs, rate falls to 8.1 pct.

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. employers added 96,000 jobs last month, a weak figure that could slow the momentum President Barack Obama hoped to gain from his speech Thursday night to the Democratic National Convention.

The unemployment rate fell to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent in July. But that was only because more people gave up looking for jobs. People who are out of work are counted as unemployed only if they're looking for a job.

The government also said Friday that 41,000 fewer jobs were created in July and June than first estimated. The economy has added just 139,000 jobs a month since the start of the year, below 2011's average of 153,000.

Cash-short governments were a key reason the job market was weaker in June and July than first estimated. Federal, state and local governments cut 39,000 jobs in those months - above the earlier estimate of 18,000. In previous recoveries, governments have typically added jobs, not shed them.

Friday's report was discouraging throughout. Hourly pay fell, manufacturers cut the most jobs in two years and the number of people in the work force dropped to its lowest level in 31 years.

Stocks ticked higher in the first hour of trading, as investors anticipate the Federal Reserve will unveil a new bond-buying program at its meeting next week to try to lift the economy. The goal of the bond purchases would be to lower long-term interest rates to encourage borrowing and spending.

"This weak jobs report is going to feed into (the Fed's) argument that the economy is growing at a sub-par pace," said John Silvia, chief economist at Wells Fargo.

The report provided fodder for both presidential candidates. Soon after the report was issued, Republican nominee Mitt Romney pointed to 43 straight months in which unemployment has now exceeded 8 percent.

"President Obama just hasn't lived up to his promises, and his policies haven't worked," Romney said in a statement.

At the same time, August marked the 30th straight month of private-sector job gains. Alan Krueger, the White House's top economist, noted that 4.6 million private sector jobs have been created in that time.

Friday's jobs report is among the most politically consequential of the campaign. It arrives as the presidential race enters the final two months before Election Day. Jobs are the core issue, and the report could sway some undecided voters.

There will be two additional employment reports before the election. But by then, more Americans will have made up their minds.

In his speech Thursday night, Obama acknowledged incomplete progress in repairing the still-struggling economy and asked voters to remain patient.

"The truth is, it will take more than a few years for us to solve challenges that have built up over the decades," Obama said.

Jim O'Sullivan, chief U.S. economist at High Frequency Economics, noted that hiring has improved slightly in the past two months. Job gains averaged 119,000 in July and August, up from an average monthly gain of 67,000 in the April-June quarter.

"There's no sign of momentum fading," he said. "That said, it's not much better. ... What you're left with is an economy that's still growing, but pretty modestly."

In addition to those who've given up looking for work, many young Americans are avoiding the job market by remaining in school. All told, the proportion of the adult population that's either working or looking for work fell to 63.5 percent.

That's the lowest level in 31 years for the so-called labor force participation rate. The rate peaked at 67.3 percent in early 2000.

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist at Capital Economics, says labor force participation is on a long-term slide.

"You've got the aging of the baby boom generation," Ashworth notes. "That has been greatly compounded by the effects of the recession and the slow recovery. People are just losing patience" and dropping out of the labor force.

In two or three years, though, Ashworth expects a stronger economy will encourage more Americans to seek work and will push the participation rate up. But the higher participation rates won't last once baby boomer retirements pick up, causing more people to leave the work force, he predicts.

More than 12.5 million people were unemployed last month. But when discouraged workers and those who have part-time jobs but would prefer full-time work are included, more than 23 million Americans are under-employed. And the "under-employment" rate is 14.7 percent.

At its meeting on Wednesday and Thursday, the Fed is expected to consider a range of options to try to help the economy. Besides bond buying, the Fed is also considering whether to extend the timetable for any increase in record-low short-term interest rates. The Fed's current plan is to maintain record-low rates until at least late 2014.

Anthony Chan, chief economist at Chase Wealth Management, says further Fed action would likely send stock prices up, making consumers feel wealthier and more willing to spend.

Average hourly wages dipped a penny in August to $23.52 and are only slightly ahead of inflation in the past year.

The average work week was unchanged in August after being revised downward in July to 34.4 hours. And the number of temporary jobs fell for the first time in five months. Both figures suggest that companies are seeing less demand for their services and need fewer workers.

Many of the jobs were in lower-paying industries such as retail, which added 6,100 jobs, and hotels, restaurants and other leisure industries, which gained 34,000. Higher-paying manufacturing jobs fell by 15,000, the most in two years.

The manufacturing losses might have been skewed by seasonal distortions. More than half the job losses were in the auto industry. Fewer automakers shut down plants this summer to capitalize on greater demand for cars and trucks. As a result, fewer workers were temporarily laid off in July, and so fewer were called back to work in August.

The weak pace of hiring is the latest sign that businesses are reluctant to make big investments or add more workers. Europe's financial crisis has pushed the region's economy to the edge of recession. And a set of tax hikes and spending cuts scheduled to take effect at the beginning of the year have created uncertainty about future growth.

No president since Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Great Depression has been re-elected with a jobless rate over 8 percent. This year's election will likely turn on whether voters see the economy as improving or remaining stagnant or getting worse under Obama.

The white-fronted dove, though not as abundant, is also a legal game. They are found in Rio Grande Valley and they normally stay in bushy places to look for seeds and insects. Only two of these are allowed per permit.

Laws imposed on Texas dove hunting allow for the protection of the environment. They are put in place so that the balance of the ecosystem stays in check.
