Types of Juicers - Shopping And Product Reviews

If you?ve decided to juice and you?ve begun looking at the various juicers available on the market, you have probably come to realize that there are different types you can purchase. Before you go out and buy your juicer, take some time to learn the differences and determine which one suits your juicing needs and preferences.

A centrifugal juicer is the most common juicer sold. This type of juicer grates the produce to create your juice. The basket spins creating centrifugal force (hence centrifugal juicer) that pushes the juice through tiny holes and the pulp is ejected. Some things to know about centrifugal juicers: they operate at a higher rpm (typically 3600-13,000) resulting in more foam, they are not the best for leafy greens or wheatgrass, they tend to be more affordable than other juicers and they may have a large feed chute cutting down on produce preparation time (i.e. less pre-cutting).

A masticating juicer has a single gear or an auger that actually chews or cuts the fruit and vegetables using a screw-like bland. The single gear squeezes the pulp and the mesh screen releases the juice. Some things to know about masticating juicers: they have a slower rpm (designed like this specially to create high quality juice from vegetables), it has a powerful motor, juices wheatgrass and leafy greens well, can be used for other functions like creating baby food and fruit sorbet, and more expensive than centrifugal juicers.

Twin gear juicers (trituration) operate at the lowest rpm rate (between 80 and 110) resulting in the most efficient juice yield with the least amount of foam and heat created. This juicer presses the produce between two interlocking roller gears to extract juice from the produce. Some things to know about twin gear juices: has the slowest rpm, has attachments for fruits with hard exteriors, it has other food processing abilities (like creating baby food and pasta), it works well for juicing wheatgrass and other leafy greens and is the most expensive type of juicer available.

And finally there is a citrus juicer. These can be manually operated or motorized. By first cutting the produce (like a lemon or grapefruit) and then pressing it into the reamer, the juicer rotates back and forth extracting the juice. This type of juicer works better on citrus fruits than other available juicers.
