Pembroke golf: Titans seek ninth straight division title

Pembroke golf and division titles go hand in hand. The Titans hit the links this week to defend their eighth straight division title, but this year, they want to get back to a place they once frequented ? the state tournament.

?Our goals for this year are to repeat as Fisher Division champions and finish in the top three at the South Sectional Tournament,? Pembroke Head Coach Paul Consolati said. ?A top three finish would grant us an invitation to the state tournament. Accomplishing these two goals will not be easy.?

Well, the Titans are certainly off to a great start. They opened the 2012 season Tuesday at Pembroke Country Club with a 255-269 win over Nauset. Senior captain Kevin Gately was the medalist with a one-over par 37.

Having graduated three starters from a year ago ? Nick Logan, and all-stars Pete Camerlengo (Rhode Island College) and Garrett Wetherbee (Campbell University) ? the Titans really need solid efforts from their top two this fall ? Gately (two-time Patriot League all-star) and senior captain Jon Nelson.

?Kevin shot under par on several occasions last year as well as qualifying for the state tournament as an individual. He currently holds the school record with a four under par in a nine-hole match,? Consolati said. ?Jon had a great start to last year?s season, but hurt his wrist in early October. He is extremely talented. I think he and Kevin will be two of best golfers in the Patriot League this season.?

Following Gately and Nelson at one and two, the Titans have in their starting lineup seniors Dan Negus, Evan Morris, Mike Campbell, Chris Diprizio, Kyle Richard, and Vincent Cesario, and juniors Sean MacRae and Austin Malley.

?All of these players improved a lot over this summer and are primed for a good season,? said Consolati, noting the tough competition the team faces in the Patriot League. ?Last year, we had to beat Hanover in the last match of the season to win the Fisher Division. They were a very talented and young team. I think they will be very good and make it difficult to repeat as Fisher Division champions. In the Keenan Division, perennial powerhouse Duxbury will field a talented lineup. They will be solid from one to eight.?

The Titans face Duxbury Sept. 11.

?It should be a very competitive match,? Consolati said.

One thing the Titans learned is that there are no guarantees.

?Two years ago, we won the South Sectional championship and came in second in the Division 3 State Tournament. Last year, we expected to get a shot at the state title, but came up short with an eighth-place finish at Sectionals,? Consolati said. ?This year, we know we have to be prepared to play our best golf in late October.?

So, what will make a successful season?

?I consider the season a success if we are a better team at the end of the season than when we started,? Consolati said. ?This includes our younger golfers who will looking to play a bigger role on the team in the years to come.?
