It could be an amazing idea you had in the shower or a freshly conceived idea with all of the brilliance of a mad scientist and you MUST HAVE IT. You ask yourself ?Why hasn?t anyone thought of this before? It?s genius! I?m genius!! Genius, I tell you.?
2)????? I?m going to sell this someday. ? Smart gatherers watch trends online and follow current events to try to imagine what the next sellable domain name will be. Others buy in blocks and chunks to try to corner a market, such as SomeNameFL.com, SomeNameMI.com, etc. It?s easy to hold on to this type of domain for years because you can visualize the big fat paycheck coming your way when a large corporation decides to name their latest project the same thing as the domain you have registered. You just know in your heart that your gut instincts and premonitions will have you rolling in dough by age 35.
3)????? I can?t believe it?s not taken! ? Internet hounds have been known to sit at their registrar just randomly typing in ideas for a project hoping the dot com is available. And. There. It. Is. The holy grail of domain names and the registrar is telling me it?s available? What? How can that be?? It?s so simple, it?s not commonly misspelled, it?s less than 10 characters. MUST HAVE IT. 4)????? What a really sound business idea! ? Passive gathering doesn?t always lead to floundering domains with no foreseeable site. SEO expert Ryan Jones notes ?I bought failpictures.com after I couldn?t believe it was still available. Then built a site.? on the flip side he adds ?Several times I?ve been talking with other SEOs at conference bar and pulled out my phone to register a domain around a new idea we just had. I still need to launch several of those conference ideas I had, never got around to it.?
5)????? Fear ? If we don?t snatch up ourlegalname.com, someone else could and post those videos of us attempting to dance the Macarena, or the 2nd grade picture with the Winnie the Pooh butterfly collar and mom?s attempt at a haircut. Hmmm, should probably get the .net and .org too, just to be safe.
The rationale is easy. For a mere 15 bucks I can own this name! In a world where there a millions of Jenny?s and Johnny?s it feels good to own a name. The immediacy is born of our innate desire to get to something first before some genius on the other side of the world thinks of the exact same thing at the same moment but that fool didn?t run to his computer ? ha! Plus there?s that sneaking suspicion that Big Brother is tracking which domain names we search and when they see the sheer genius of what we are looking at and they will steal it. Better not wait until morning or it will be gone!
The brilliance of these ideas only start to fade when you receive a domain renewal notice for a domain you registered back in 2004. You begin to question the logic of keeping the domain name. ?Gee, it hasn?t done anything for me in the last 8 years.? But you know what?s going to happen?
Cue The X Files theme song.
You?re going to let it expire. Someone will come along and snatch it up and make a million dollars! Therefore you wait until the very last moment and click ?Renew Now? Ah, your baby is safe for another year. You?ll put up an index page tomorrow to get rid of that parked page. At the very least you?ll put some ads on there on the off chance that someone types in the really awesome domain. Yeah, tomorrow.
